We Live Here: POP Table’s stint in Stockholm

On a few snowy days in early February, POP Table moved to Stockholm with a select group of Icelandic and Swedish designers, to inhabit a single apartment for the duration of Stockholm Design Week 2015. (It was sort of like The Real World, but for inanimate objects, so there was less bickering). The result of this curated living-space was an impeccable exhibit of Nordic design. It was at once cohesive and eclectic and was executed with the type of borderline obnoxious perfection one would expect from a Nordic design cooperation. The food was beautiful and tasty, the drinks thoughtful, and even the toilet was turned into art.

We are moving to Stockholm…

But just for a week!

POP Table is once again in good design company at the We Live Here exhibit in Stockholm from 2-8.2.  More details on this unique event below. Hope to see you in Stockholm!

Icelandic and Finnish designers move in together to Stockholm for Stockholm Design Week 2015.

In total, over 80 designers and design studios from Finland, Iceland and Sweden along with dozens of design companies collaborate to create a contemporary home for the two design scenes.

Curated by Hlin Helga Guðlaugsdóttir, Elina Aalto and Marika Tesolin, the decoration of the home plays with pairs of items, ‘doubles’ that often occur when two people move in together, and communicates the different themes that occur in Finnish and Icelandic design today.

The home also plays host to a series of events.

Opening hours

Tuesday 3.2. 11-16

Wednesday 4.2. 11-16

Friday 6.2. 11-16

Saturday 7.2. 11-16

Sunday 8.2. 11-16

The weekend is for families, including exciting workshops during the days.

Helsinki Design Week 2014: in good company

In early September 2014, POP Table was featured in Helsinki Design Week's Local Design Exhibition.

We all know that parental admonition, "You are judged by the company you keep,"  which is basically a less poetic, contemporary iteration of Ralph Waldo Emerson's famous line, "Show me who a man's friends are, and I will tell you who he is." Although there have been times when we kinda hoped that this saying wasn't true--like when we were hanging out with the bad kids who skipped school and stole candy--when it comes to our fellow exhibitors at Helsinki Design Week,  we would be honored to be judged by the company we keep.

Helsinki Design Week is the  largest design festival in the Nordic countries, and this year, the festival overall attracted a crowd of 60,000 visitors.  The Local Design/Lähimuoto exhibition was the main exhibition of the overall festival, and was dedicated to featuring local designers. The exhibit was housed at the historic Teurastamo grounds in Helsinki and received 15,000 guests over 10 days. POP Furniture Company was geeked/honored/humbled to be among the 26 local designers on exhibit.

And we got an award, to boot!

The Association of Interior Design Editors also awarded POP Table and the Tick legs (from designer Jakob Schenk) as among the 12 Best Interior Design Products of 2014. It's no secret that we are new kids on the design block, so this was a distinction that we received with gratitude and a bit of surprise.  This is especially true considering that our product puts the design responsibility on the consumer to design their own POP Table--we merely provide the foundation of quality materials and designer legs, plus the freedom for the customer to create their own POP Table within our massive customization universe. In that sense, some aspects of our product aren't necessarily high design, but we are encouraged by the designation of our unique concept as worthy of such an award.

The winning designs were featured in a separate design-container, styled by the Association of Interior Design Editors.

 We've got new legs!

Helsinki Design Week also served as the perfect platform for us to introduce prototypes of two new legs designs that we expect to make available through our website in early 2015. The color and finish of the leg surfaces will have the same customization options as our table surfaces. In addition, there will be an uncovered, wood-finish available. The legs also pack flat, for convenient shipping and storage. More information about these to come!

The Local Design exhibition was an outdoor exhibition, by which designers created their own exhibition space in old shipping containers. It was a unique presentation format that was well-received. Outdoor events in the autumn in Helsinki can be quite risky, but the design gods were on our side, and the sun was shining for almost the entire ten days of the exhibition.

You guys, there were POP Tables at Flow (and now you can buy them!)

In case you missed all of our boastings about Flow Festival last week, allow us to fill you in: there were POP Tables e-v-e-r-y-w-h-e-r-e. And when we say everywhere we mean that they were on the Lämpö terrace across from the main stage...which is kind of like being everywhere, and was definitely a pretty sweet spot!

During the festival, the Lämpö terrace is the ideal spot to take a seat and have a drink while remaining in the mix of all of the mainstage action. Flow Festival gave us free reign to outfit the Lämpö terrace with our tables, with the goal of making the space as colorful as possible. Bold colors are definitely our jam, but we also know the appeal of classic black and white. So, we designed our Flow tables with a mix of all of our bold POP colors, including some classic black and white on a few surfaces and edgebands.

Colorful POP Tables = tons o' fun!

Of course we didn't spend the entire festival ogling those shiny tabletops. Slowdive was at least enough of an attraction to pull us away from the terrace for a bit.

Sample Sale

We are now offering our made-for-Flow POP Tables at discounted sample prices. Come check them out at the Flow Festival Garage Sale at Suvilahti on Thursday, 14.8 from 14-18:00.

The tabletops and  Tick legs are priced individually. Each of the tables has one black or white side and one colorful side (Al Green, Ariel Pink, Kinda Blue, Orange Juice, Mellow Yellow, or Simply Red--you can check the colors here). Matte and glossy finishes available. Sizes range from 200x80/90cm. Payment accepted on-site via bank/credit card (POP table will have a separate payment system than the rest of the garage sale items).

Unfortunately, we can't accept advance reservations, but feel free to email us any questions at

See you Thursday!

(POP) Art happens in the darndest places

POP Art is not dead, it's just hiding in middle Finland. In Mänttä, Finland to be exact, at the beautifully constructed Serlachius Museum.  Is it a coincidence that this POP exhibition is a mere 15 kilometers from the magical place where POP Tables are made? Absolutely not. That's not even funny. (We like to the think that the Universe supports our penchant for all things POP.)

A collection of work from international and Finnish artists, SUPERPOP! showcases many of the eye-popping, sugary sweet, anti-elite classics from the POP art era that we all know and love (or not). Along Serlachius' vast white walls, you'll find the colorful works of Lichtenstein and Warhol hanging alongside pieces from well-known Finnish POP artists. We were, of course, quite at home with the color scheme and genuinely impressed by this expansive, high-art exhibit--especially in such an out-of-the-way place.

It goes without saying that we were tickled pink to find such a great exhibition quite literally in our own backyard. (Speaking of pink, we've never seen Kim Jong Il look so ravishing.)

POP Tables fit right in at The Fried Music

When POP Table launched earlier this year, one of our first business customers was The Fried Music. Fried is a music production company based in Helsinki's Punavuori district. Fried's roster of musicians includes prominent Finnish artists Anna Puu, Jenni Vartiainen, and Cheek. So, when they approached us in need of tables for their recently renovated 450 m2 studio complex, we were like, "Woah!"

Fried customized several of their own tables for the studio's working and lounge spaces, using  a mix of classic black/white surfaces, and bold POP colors.

The flood of natural light and white walls in the kitchen and working space at Fried welcomes the POPs of yellow and orange color, while the classic black and white surfaces adhere more to the strict Scandinavian color pallete. All in all, it's a pretty perfect POP mix.

Kolho, Finland: where the magic happens.

There are many aspects of the POP Table project that warm our hearts, but one thing that we are perhaps most proud of is that all of our POP Table table-tops are made in Finland at a family-owned factory: Mesitek Oy. We have a long standing relationship with Mesitek, and we believe that our partnership is an integral part of the POP Table concept.

mesitek door

We visited the factory last week to prepare our first POP Table shipment. It was a long, exhausting day, but we left the premises feeling confident in the quality of our product, and wiser about the process by which each POP Table is crafted, one custom-order at a time. As you would expect in any premises where furniture is crafted, there's plenty of noise, and flying wood chips flying around at Mesitek, but it also feels distinctly family-owned. Perhaps we feel this way because of the sweet Tibetan Spaniel who dozed lazily on the office floor throughout the day, or the amazing homemade salmon soup we were served for lunch...

We started our morning with a briefing on the first generation of our product-packaging as designed by the big boss at Mesitek--an experienced fellow in the business whose expertise we rely on. Prioritizing the safety of our POP Tables along their journey to their new homes, while keeping environmental impact and aesthetics in mind proved to be a challenge, but we were able to create a solution that satisfied all of those priorities. However, as we feel there is always room for improvement, we will certainly continue to experiment with packaging solutions just to see if there might be a more protective and more handsome solution somewhere out there.

Next, we took a tour of the factory premises, which the owners often traverse on an old scooter, getting them to and from the factory floor and the main office with quickness. (We considered this a charming detail, if nothing else). There had been some renovations and restructuring of the premises since our last visit, and we were excited to see that POP Table now has its own dedicated space.

After our tour, we got to work inspecting our first POP Table litter. We stood by like proud parents as the finishing touches were applied, and even pitched-in a bit to shine up the surfaces in preparation for packaging.

Once clean, the POP Tables were wrapped snugly in their protective packaging and labeled for delivery. We look forward to our continued partnership with Mesitek, and honestly can't wait to get back to there soon to coddle and coo over the newest batch of POP Tables.

Have you received a POP Table of your own yet? If so, what comments do you have about the packaging?

Do you appreciate knowing where the products you buy are made? How big of a factor are Finnish-made or European-made products in your buying decisions? Let us know in the comments!

It’s all about the coding

As a team, we chatted, planned, collaborated, progressed, digressed, and scribbled on paper for months, BUT that only took us so far. We soon learned that to get all of our ideas to POP online we'd need some help from some web development experts. So, we invited them over, set up our POP tables, made some pizza and watched the magic happen.

Ok, so it wasn't actually magical, but it was pretty impressive to us laypersons.

(Full disclosure: those guys were working hard, i was probably on Pinterest...)

After many long nights, fueled on junk food and a few beers, our POP site was finally ready to go! it's all thanks to the POP Table dream team.

POP Table field trip: Berlin

Although we chose the Sinus trestle because of its smart design and compatibility with our concept, it doesn't hurt that L&Z's office is in Berlin. (aaaaah, amazing Berlin).

After over one year of email exchanges, we finally had the opportunity to meet the L&Z team in person. On a very rainy November morning we sipped tea in their office in Mitte while we discussed business development and showed them the progress we were making on the POP Table site. It was exciting to share our progress and to hear more about L&Z's concept.

We then went along with the L&Z guys to Kantine, the cantine (get it?) at architect David Chipperfield's Berlin office. There we enjoyed a very traditional German lunch: boiled eggs, kale and mashed potatoes in a mustard sauce. It was surprisingly tasty, and perfect for a chilly afternoon. Of course, the space itself was impeccable--stark, minimal, dominated by concrete.

Field trip Berlin(1)
our lunch: Senfeier. check out the super cool utensils. they were specifically designed for use in Kantine. like, duh.

During our long weekend in Berlin we also discovered another of the city's gems: Michelberger Hotel. Recommended to us by a friend, Michelberger exceeded our expectations. It was hip, cozy, imaginative, welcoming, and wonderfully weird in that Coen Brothers sort of way. Although it's also considered a "budget hotel," we happened to be staying there on the same night as US indie rockers The National, so we figure it must be good enough for even the highrollers among us.

We were too cool (read: shy) to take a photo of the band, so here's a pic of our sparkling wine glasses instead. Cheers!

There's so much inspiration to be found in Berlin. We're looking forward to our next field trip already.

POP Table photoshoot

You haven’t seen a true diva until you’ve seen a POP Table in front of the camera.

After many hours of productive (and sometimes meandering) planning sessions, we rose early on a misty October morning for our first ever POP Table video and photoshoot. TK8 studios provided the perfect backdrop for our shoot. the all-white surroundings really made our POP Tables, well... POP

Our talented photographer Jenni Kauppila worked tirelessly to capture the colors as true as possible, and to find all the best angles on our sweet POP Tables.

For our video, we wanted to show as many versions of the POP Tables as possible. Our expert video director, Sam Shingler of Gang of Three, envisioned a stop-motion style film for us so we could show-off as many as possible in under 50 seconds. To capture his vision perfectly, we hired a super fancy Red digital video camera. Between takes, we painstakingly marked the position of the previous table before placing the new one in order to achieve the desired effect.

The following week, after hours and hours of imaging and editing, we ended up with a pretty spiffy final product: vibrant still images for our online gallery, and a dynamic video for our homepage.

We are forever immensely to Sam and Jenni  for their vision and talent, and their ability to make our POP Tables come alive on the screen.
